Winning Versus Battles depends on two things – having a solid defensive layout and making a good attack. In this guide, I will show you the techniques to attack on Builder Hall 3 and have some good results with it.

I will show you how to scout a base and decide which one of these strategies you should use and you’ll be able to get a 2-Star attack (or at least a high 1-Star attack) without problems all of the time.

BH2 & BH3 Attacking Guide

You attack will always consist of 3 steps:
  • Scouting the base you need to attack
  • Choosing your troops & make your attacking plan
  • Performing the attack
I know many people use all Archers all of the time – this is not bad but often times will result in an attack with less than 40%, which often times means you will not win the Versus Battle.

The key to success is the ability to adapt to the base you will attack, spotting the weak spots and then use this knowledge to get your attack in.

Most of the times, Boxer Giants along with Sneaky Archers are a good solution – but I will also show you some examples where this won’t turn out good and give you alternative attacking strategies you can use when you see a layout that will crush your Giant & Archer combination.

Scouting The Base

In Builder Hall 2 & Builder Hall 3, you will have two defenses you will need to take care of – if you can do that you will win the attack with either a high percentage 2-Star or also 3-Star performance. These two defenses are:
  • The Double Cannon
  • The Crusher
They can be extremely dangerous because they will wreck your Giants in a short time and then your supporting Archers are also not standing very longer.

No Barbarians?

The reason why I do not recommend Barbarians along with Giants is that they will be fast and go in front of the Giants soon and get killed by the defenses too fast – Archer are staying behind the Giants most of the time and deal their damage until the end.
I know that not everybody will agree with me on that, because Barbarians can get good results, but their attack is often a coinflip as a bad trap setup or pathing can mess up your attack easily.

That’s the reason why I do not recommend them in the first place.

Builder Base Attacking – Giants & Archers

This is the most popular and also most successful setup to use for you. Always have 2 of your army slots with Giants and 1 with Archers (if you have 4 slots, you can use 2 slots with Archers). Using only one slot with Giants is not working well, as they get killed too fast during the raid!

You can use this setup unless you see a setup like these:
Do you see the problem?

When using Giants & Archer, you always need to be able to do one of these things:
  • Take down the Double Cannon early and prevent your Giants walking into the Crusher until your Archer can take down the Builder Hall
  • Take down the Crusher with the Archers from a distance without losing more than 1 Giant to tank it
If you’re not able to do that, you don’t want to use this method (I will show you 2 alternatives for that below!)

If you have a setup where you can do that, you definitely want to use Giants & Archer. It’s often times that the Builder Hall is located in between the Double Cannon and the Crusher and the Double can is the 2nd or 3rd defense on the way to the Builder Hall.
Now you will send in your Giants on the closest location of the Double Cannon. The time your Giants are hitting on wall is perfect for your Archers to clean up buildings on the outside or maybe even to snip defenses over the wall.
Don’t be afraid if that takes some time, your Giants will tank the damage and all of your troops will walk into the base when this is done.
Make sure to ALWAYS send one Giant in front of the other ones to trigger traps! This will prevent that either more than 1 Giant will step into a Spring Trap or Pull Trap and also that your Archers take unnecessary damage from Mines.
At the point when your Giants will enter the base and your Archer are moving in after them, you’re done and you will already have crushed the base.

At this time, you probably have 2 Giants alive and that’s enough time for your Archers to take the Builder Hall and get you above 60% easily.
One more thing, try to have like 2 Archers you can deploy a little later, in case that there will be unprotected outside buildings you can snipe afterward. This often helps to push an additional 10-15% in many cases.

Builder Base Attacking – All Archers (Alternative 1)

When you have a layout that is not great for Giants to attack because the Crusher and the Double Cannon will wreck them, you can choose to use all Archers. You need to make the best out of your attack and some layouts will give you <30 amp="" archers.="" attacking="" giants="" p="" when="" with="">
When using this, you also need to check some things. All Archers is working and will give you 1-Star most of the time when you do mind some things.

The biggest threat to them is:

  • Long Range Archer Towers
  • Mines
  • Compact layout
Before using all Archers, you will need to check out if it’s possible to get half of the buildings with it – to get this, you will need to make sure that you can snipe at least 4 buildings that are outside the range of any defenses!

Also check if there are corner buildings, more and more people do that and it’s nice to get one building for 1 Archer that can join your attack later.
If you see a layout like that, you don’t want to attack it with all Archers, because you will lose many of them already by sniping outside buildings.

When deploying your Archers, you need to be very careful with them. If there’s one outside building that’s not covered by a defense, only send 1 Archer in there.

Also, send it from a little distance to make sure the Archer keeps the maximum range! Sometimes the AI is a little weird and lets them walk into the ranges.

If there are two building on the outside that are safe to snipe, only use 1 Archer as well. This will save your troops and you have plenty of time for your attack – be patient!

Ranges of Sneaky Archers

Your Sneaky Archers have a range of 3.5 tiles, but this is always calculated from the central tile of their target. Let me show you this with this example here:
As you can see, The Archers are walking until they are 2.5 tiles away from the Army Camps. This is their maximum range here and they will not shoot at it when they are standing further away, they would walk closer.

When sniping outside structures and you want your Archer to be safe, you will need to know this to see if it’s safe or not for them.

It needs a little practice to get used to the ranges, but you can use these rules here:
  • 7 Tiles range of Double Cannon, Hidden Tesla & Archer Tower (Fast Attack): Needs 2 tiles between defense & target
  • 9 Tiles range of Cannon: needs 4 tiles between
  • 11 Tiles range of Archer Tower (Long Range): needs 6 tiles in between
This makes it hard to get a lot of percentage without investing several Archers, but that’s not a problem. When you get to the point when you don’t have any buildings on the outside left you can simply snipe you will need to start using more than 1 Archer to get them, depending on the building and the defense.

Now I will tell you how many Archers you will need to do that
The Archer’s ability will keep them save for the first seconds, so you should deploy multiple Archers ALWAYS at the same time to get the MAXIMUM damage done!

I simplified some math here, but you can expect that an Archer can take 2-3 shots and is hidden for 4-5 seconds. Here’s how many Archers you will need when they are in range of either an Archer Tower or a Cannon:
  • 2 Archers: Army Camp, Elixir Collector, Gold Mine, Gem Mine, Builder Barrack
  • 3 Archers: Gold Storage, Elixir Storage
  • 4 Archers: Star Laboratory, Clock Tower
Again, these numbers are only working when ONE defense has your target building in range! If there is more, you need to DOUBLE the amount of Archers you need!

During attacking you will need to do it step-by-step! Don’t do a Chinese Wall deployment and watch it happen. Deploy your Archers carefully for every building after each other – otherwise you will just waste them and won’t get your 50% needed!

Builder Base Attacking – Baby Dragons & Beta Minions (Alternative 2; Builder Hall 3 only!)

If you see a layout that will be hard to come by with Giants/Archers or all Archers, you will need a new plan. Here’s a layout that is really bad to attack with Giants (the Crusher and the Double Cannon are impossible to be taken down) and the layout is extremely compact so sniping will also end up bad.
Luckily, the air defense is pretty weak and located on one side. So you can go in with Baby Dragons and Minions!

Now you can move in with 4 Baby Dragons in front from the side where no air defense is and then place your Minions behind them.
The Baby Dragons will stand up long enough for the Minions to deal enough damage to get you the 1-Star attack and also sometimes the Builder Hall for the 2-Star victory.

Conclusion

As you can see, you shouldn’t move in with one single attacking strategy, you need to adapt to the base layout. Every layout has weak spots you can use.

Base Design matters a lot in Versus Battles. It is responsible for half of your success and no matter how good you are at attacking, if your base gets constantly wrecked you won’t be able to get into the higher Trophy Ranges where the loot is good. I gathered together the latest solid base designs for BH3 and will also update them constantly.

All base layouts here are up to date with the latest Clash of Clans Update and include the additional Cannon.
Take note, some bases are rebuilt with a higher Builder Hall account, but only the defenses and buildings from Builder Hall 3 bases are used.

Builder Hall 3 Base Layouts

Before I show you the best defensive Builder Hall 3 Base Designs, I also want to recommend some articles about the Builder Base that you should read as well:
These two guides will help you beat BH3 completely without any problems.

BH3 Base Layout Without Crusher

This base layout is for those of you who haven#t build the Crusher yet. It focuses on pushing Boxer Giants out of the base with the Push Traps as soon as they enter the base and this works very often.

BH3 Defensive Layout

This open layout messes with attackers a lot as the Giants will always go for the open spots (and get pushed out again by the Push Traps (leaving the supporting Archers/Barbarians unprotected). It’s not possible to get the Town Hall by sniping from the back.

BH3 Layout “The Pusher”

This effective layout uses the Push Traps to push attacking troops (often times Boxer Giants) into the Crusher. In this case, the attacker has no chance to get past 30% on your base. Sniping with all Archers is also not possible here as the base covers the whole area with defenses – one of my favorite bases on Builder Hall 3!

Builder Hall 3 Defensive Layout Anti 2-Star

This is an extremely popular base layout, for a reason! It works great and it’s very hard to get even 2 Stars against. If you have all Army Camps and upgraded your troops, you want to use this base layout as it will bring you the victory when you get 1 Star in your attacks almost all the time.

The double layer of walls make it impossible to break in (unless using Bombers) and the defensive power on the other side is insane, pushing tanks directly into the Crusher. Even if somebody manages to get your Builder Hall, it will be a low 1-Star attack with less than 40%, so you can still make it a victory with a decent attack from your side.

Another Anti-2-Star Base for BH3

If you want a more individual Anti 2-Star layout, you can use this one that uses a more complicated funneling in front of the Builder Hall.

Giants will still walk around the base to enter at the open spots (and get either pushed into the Crusher or enter the Spring Trap). Also, air attacks are not possible against this layout, since the Firecrackers are well-protected to make it a low 1-Star attack, if even that.

Conclusion

Defending is a very important part in Versus Battles and having a solid base can help you get a lot of victories, even if you mess up an attack and get a low result. These bases are all proven to get good results up to 1500+ Trophies and I used all of them myself for at least 20 Versus Battles to see how they perform.

When you do Versus Battles in your Builder Base it’s not only about executing a good attack; it’s also about defending against your direct opponent. A good base can save you a lot of attacks and can even compensate for a bad attack with a good defense. I have had multiple Versus Battles when I did not get a Star or 50% destruction, but my base got my back and saved me the victory. In this guide, I’ll show you some defensive tips and some working base layouts for your Builder Base.

Builder Base Defending Tips

I know many here are still in the mindset of regular Multiplayer Attacks or Clan War attacks, where offense > defense. In Versus Battles, your defensive strength has a direct impact on the result and can be the deciding factor between victory and loss.

If you have a bad base and consistently get 2-Star or 3-Star defenses against your base, you will not be able to get a lot of victories and your good attacks might result in either a tie or even a loss.\
As you can see, my base totally got my back here and I would never have won the attack without the solid design I have (I’ll show it to you below).

If you think that the win rate doesn’t matter, you’re wrong. You need to push in the beginning, even if you reached your daily reward cap. Getting to 1000+ trophies will make your life so much easier because you will then get much more resources every day!
It took me about 2 hours to get to that point with a fairly fresh BH3 base and I can only recommend you do the same. You will get enough resources from your 3 attacks every day to keep your Lab and Builder busy for the whole day.

Now let me show you some defensive tips that you have to keep in mind for your base.

If you’re looking for some tips on how to attack properly, please check out my recent guide about attacking strategy:

Centralize Your Builder Hall

Stars matter, so make sure not to give them away easily. No matter how much destruction your opponent takes from you, Stars take priority.

I wouldn’t have been able to pick up the victory if my opponent didn’t have his Builder Hall on the outside:
Offsetting your Builder Hall is giving away one Star for free – it should not be possible for your opponent to snipe your Builder Hall easily over walls or directly from the outside!
Always keep 2 tiles between the Builder Hall and the walls. This make it impossible for Sneaky Archers to snipe over the wall.

If you don’t have enough walls or buildings yet, make sure your Builder Hall is surrounded by other buildings and defenses:

Close Walls

Closing Walls is extremely important. This will force attacking troops to take a path that you want them to take.

I know it’s tempting to build a funnel with the walls, but your opponent will perform a lot better against your base when you don’t have a closed wall ring or line.

Defense Sniping – Not With Me!

You probably don’t have many defenses in your Builder Base yet, so every single one of them counts! As soon as one goes down, your overall defense is much weaker.

Many attackers know this so they will try to take them out first – you have to prevent that at all cost!

Never set your defenses where they can be reached directly! Always have either a wall with 2 tiles distance or another building in front of them!

Making this even better, you should also try to have all your defenses covered by the range of another defenses.
Having your Archer Tower set on Long Distance Mode will help a lot in the beginning!

It will cover the whole area and make it very hard for your opponent to snipe out single buildings without investing more than one unit.

Trap Combinations

The Push Trap is a great way to move attacking troops where you want them, and with 4 tiles area, you can use it to push attacking troops into Spring Traps.
They do not damage troops, so you should point them away from your base. Put troops directly on your Spring Traps or push away to have fewer troops next to your base that your defenses can then take care of.

I know it’s funny to push troops around with combined Push Traps, but there’s no use in doing that.

In general, always test out your traps and check all replays to see which side your attackers prefer. I wrote a full detailed guide on that technique a while ago for Home Villages, but you can adapt it easily.

Now I would like to show you some solid layouts you can use.

Builder Base Designs BH2 to BH5

I’ve been gathering some solid base layouts that you can use that I’ve seen great results with.

Builder Hall 2 (BH2) Base Layout

If you own a BH2, there’s not much you can design due to the low amount of buildings, but that doesn’t mean that the layout doesn’t matter!
I recommend you use a layout like this because it will:
  • Push attacking Barbarians coming from the top away from your Builder Hall
  • Make your Cannon not directly snipe-able
  • Redirects barbarians from the bottom to the sides while the Cannon takes them out
This is probably the best you can do until you get your Builder Hall Level 3.

Builder Hall 3 (BH3) Base Layouts

Here’s my current Builder Base Level 3 layout and it’s working great so far. I’ve been pushing to 1400 Trophies and lost only 2 of the last 50 Versus Battles.
People are always attacking with Giants into my trap setups or spam Archers/Minions that get taken down fast.

Make sure you have each defense covered by at least 1 outside building, and your Archer Tower has to be at Long Range mode as well!

Maxed Builder Hall 3 Base Layout

If you have built all structures available for Builder Hall Level 3, you might want to use this layout.
Your Crusher needs to be inside and not sniped from over the walls.

Then you should focus on upgrading your Archer Tower to make it shoot Sneaky Archers in 2 shots instead of 3 shots.

Builder Hall 4 (BH4) Base Layouts

When reaching Builder Hall Level 4, you will get a ton of new stuff and it starts to become interesting.
  • Guard Post (like a defensive Clan Castle)
  • 2nd Archer Tower
  • 2nd Cannon
  • Air Bombs
  • more Walls
In general, ring base layouts will work best since the limited amount of troops will struggle with pathing on the inside, while getting shot with full power almost all the time.

Also, make sure to have your Guard Post set on the inside so it does not get isolated.
This is an example how you can arrange your layout; I also recommend you test out your traps a lot and see which spots work best.

Getting the Builder Hall is almost impossible with this layout, so your opponent will not be able to score more than 1 Star against your base (without the Builder Hall it’s not possible to get a second Star, even with 99% destruction).

Alternatively, you can also try out this base layout:
Ground troops will ignore the Builder Hall due to the walls and the other buildings around it. You should use this one when you haven’t build your Guard Post yet. ๐Ÿ™‚

Builder Hall 5 (BH5) Base Layouts

Only a few have upgraded to Builder Hall level 5 so far, but I still want to show you some top base layouts.

Builder Hall 5 is extremely attractive because it unlocks the Battle Machine and also let you gear up Cannons to Double Cannons (and more in the future) in your Home Village.

The main strategy is pointing toward an offset Builder Hall. You want to have the most defensive power located in the core. The Builder Hall is simply to big to fit and make a good layout with the walls.
In this base layout, the Builder Hall is offset, but not defenseless. The Guard Post and the Multi Mortar in the middle are providing good protection. The attacker won’t be able to destroy the whole base, no matter what tactic they try.
In this base it’s very hard (nearly impossible) for the attacker to go through the layers filled with defenses while being under full fire almost all the time.
