There are two attacking strategies that have the ability to get you high 2-Star or also 3-Star attacks in Versus Battles at Builder Hall 4. In this guide, I will show you how to use both of them and also give you some additional tips how you can crush BH4 easily.

BH4 Attacking Guide

Before I show you the attacking strategies, I also need to tell you some other things, they extremely important if you upgraded to Builder Hall 4 recently.

The attacking strategies that work best for BH4 are either mass Baby Dragons or GiArch (Giants & Archers).

Both attacks will need upgraded troops, and therefore you will need to focus on:
  • Get all Army Camps as soon as possible! That’s the first thing you will need to do when entering BH4!
  • Upgrading your Boxer Giants to Level 8 (this will give you 3 instead of 2 units per Army slot)
  • Upgrade your Baby Dragons to Level 7 or higher (this will make them deal double damage at the beginning of the raid due to her ability)
I know upgrading takes a lot of time, so I would recommend focusing on the Giants first (as you probably have them at Level 5 or Level 6 already). They will be good enough to farm the resources needed for upgrading the Baby Dragons.

Giant & Archer Attacking Strategy Builder Hall 4

This is the strategy you will use when you’re relatively fresh at BH4 and with Boxer Giants Level 8, you will be able to frequently make 2-Star attacks and sometimes even get 3 Stars.

You will be matched against Builder Hall 4 opponents, so there’s not much you’ll have to feat, except:
  • unfortunate Crusher location
  • traps
If you manage not to let them mess up your attack, you’ll be good – and that’s what I want to show you now.

Dealing With the Crusher & Traps

What you don’t want to let happen, is that your Boxer Giants are walking into the Crusher in a higher number. Always plan the path ahead they will need to take towards the Crusher.

This will make sure, that your Archers have enough time to clear off the other structure and then help taking out the Crusher.

You should, as a rough rule of thumb, have like 2 defenses in front of the Crusher on the path.
You will also want to send your troops in from the opposite side of the Builder Hall; this way will make sure that you get the Builder Hall before your Giants (might) get smashed by the Crusher.

When sending them in, make sure to always send in your Giants in a row – some people already upgraded their Spring Traps & Push Traps so that they can take out 2 of your Giants at once!
This will prevent something like this to happen:
You don’t want to walk into such setups and lose the attack because of it – often times the trap locations are so obvious that you know where they are.

Also, take your time when deploying your Archers behind the Giants! You want the Giants to trigger all the Mines (and maybe also the Mega Mine) to prevent that your Archers get damage from them.

I also leave like 2 Archers in my deck that I can use to clean of leftover, unprotected buildings when the work is done.

Your primary goal is that your Giants survive long enough so your Archers can take down the Builder Hall.

Funneling!

In most cases you will see your opponents having a layout with open walls, they are very common!
The pathing of Giants is extremely avoiding walls when there are open pieces and they will rather walk around 40% of a base than hitting a wall.

You will need to be extra sure that your Giants will hit a certain piece of wall than walking towards an open spot. It’s hard to tell the exact number, but often times it’s actually only the other side of the base that is safe to deploy them.
I recommend preparing for an attack on the open spot (with one Giant after the other to disarm traps) if you’re not 100% sure whether your Giants will hit the wall or go for the open spot in the walls.

Baby Dragon Attacking Strategy Builder Hall 4

Using Baby Dragons is something that I recommend you to do when you have them at Level 7 or higher. Air Defense at BH4 is so bad; there’s no way that this attack can fail – the only exception is when someone has set all traps to Air Mode, but I haven’t seen one single defense during my last 50 raids who did that.

The advantage is that it requires less planning than Giants & Archers and the success rate for 3 Star attacks is much higher (at a lower risk)

The only threat to your Baby Dragons attack is the Air Bomb defense – Firecrackers are not dealing much damage and take forever to kill a single Baby Dragon.

Some people say that Baby Dragon attacks can go wrong, and the only reason to fail with them at BH4 (with Baby Dragons Level 7+ and 4 Army Camps) is by deploying them in a Chinese Wall.

When attacking with Baby Dragons, there are only two things you’ll have to do:
  • Attacking into the Air Bomb defense as fast as possible
  • Deploy your Baby Dragons in a way that will use the tantrum ability (deals 80%-100% more damage at the recommended Level)
I think the first point is no surprise – the lower the time the Air Bomb can deal damage to your Baby Dragons the better for you. Don’t be scared when you lose 2-3 Baby Dragons to the Air Bombs until you got it destroyed – you have 8 Baby Dragons in total and after that there’s no big threat anymore.
At this picture you can see perfectly how you should deploy your Baby Dragons:
  • Deploy 2 Baby Dragons at the side of the Air Bombs
  • Deploy 3 Dragons on the other side of the base (they will deal their damage there without losing many hitpoints
  • Deploy them far away from each other so they will be using their ability giving them their extra damage
Now here comes the deal, you will wait until one of your Baby Dragons will die from the Air Bomb and then send in one of your left Baby Dragons in there.
You will repeat that until the Air Bomb is destroyed.

This technique has 2 advantages:
  1. A single Baby Dragon with ability deals almost the same damage like 2 Baby Dragons at the same spot
  2. The 2nd Baby Dragon won’t suffer any splash damage during that time
This is the crucial part of this whole strategy! If you do this, there’s not much that will keep you away from doing a 3-Star attack.

Base Design matters a lot in Versus Battles – it is responsible for half of your success and no matter how good you are at attacking, if your base gets constantly wrecked you won’t be able to get into the higher Trophy Ranges where the loot is good. I gathered together the latest solid base designs for BH4 and will also update them constantly.

Take note, some bases are rebuilt with a higher Builder Hall account, but only the defenses and buildings from Builder Hall 4 bases are used.

Builder Hall 4 Base Layouts

Before I show you the best defensive Builder Hall 4 Base Designs, I also want to recommend some articles about the Builder Base that you should read as well:
These two guides will help you beat BH4 completely without any problems.

Anti 2-Star With Push Traps BH4 Layout

This Builder Hall 4 layout is the logic expansion of the popular BH3 layout that uses the double layer walls. Boxer Giants will always walk towards the open spots and there’s no way to get the Builder Hall without investing most of the troops. The open spots are extremely difficult to come by, because the push traps will push into the Crusher, the Spring Traps are directly behind so it’s likely that your opponent will lose 2-3 Boxer Giants in the beginning and the other troops will get taken down extremely fast. I’ve never seen this base lose more than 1 Star, except if the attacker has well-upgraded Baby Dragons.

Basic Builder Hall 4 Layout

Base layout for BH4, I tried it at around 2000 Trophies and saw great results. The Crusher is not centralized, but this helps trapping a lot of attackers as they will start their attack and then die hammering on the walls.

Builder Hall 4 Anti 2-Star Layout

This is another modification from the double layer protection base design. This one will also rely on the Crusher protecting the base and forcing the attacker to go into the first compartment and lose many Giants. Actually, one of my favorite designs and I hate attacking it myself.

The Funnel BH4 Defensive Layout

This base has a nice general layout. The Crusher and the Double Cannon will be the main element of your defense. The attacker is forced to go for one of them and get crushed by the other. Losing the Builder Hall is almost impossible, since all the defenses have it in range.
In case an attacker wants to enter from the back, he will see that funneling is his worst nightmare because the troops will always go for the back (and Giants go into the Push Traps and Spring Traps).

Never seen someone getting more then a 60% 1-Star attack against this base at around 2000 Trophies.

My BH4 Base Layout

This is the layout that I created myself when getting to Builder Hall 4, inspired by the open cross design. The nice thing is that the walls do nothing else but funnel and most attackers attempt it with all Archers (and never get more than 1 Star).
I used this layout to push to 2000 Trophies and only lost a few Versus Battles mostly by well performed air attacks.

Anti-Baby Dragon BH4 Layout

When you push to 2400+ Trophies, you will see more frequent Baby Dragon attacks – here’s a base that I found very effective.

Your attacker will always attempt to get the Firecracker down and also start with baby Dragons around the Crusher. The Firecrackers are well-protected and the Crusher is covered by the Hidden Tesla and the Archer Tower.
There’s no way to get more than 1 Star out of this base with Baby Dragons and it also holds up well against Giants with Archers..

Conclusion

Defending is a very important part in Versus Battles and having a solid base can help you get a lot of victories, even if you mess up an attack and get a low result. These bases here are all proven to get good results up to 2500+ Trophies and I used all of them myself for at least 20 Versus Battles to see how they perform.

When you do Versus Battles in your Builder Base it’s not only about executing a good attack; it’s also about defending against your direct opponent. A good base can save you a lot of attacks and can even compensate for a bad attack with a good defense. I have had multiple Versus Battles when I did not get a Star or 50% destruction, but my base got my back and saved me the victory. In this guide, I’ll show you some defensive tips and some working base layouts for your Builder Base.

Builder Base Defending Tips

I know many here are still in the mindset of regular Multiplayer Attacks or Clan War attacks, where offense > defense. In Versus Battles, your defensive strength has a direct impact on the result and can be the deciding factor between victory and loss.

If you have a bad base and consistently get 2-Star or 3-Star defenses against your base, you will not be able to get a lot of victories and your good attacks might result in either a tie or even a loss.\
As you can see, my base totally got my back here and I would never have won the attack without the solid design I have (I’ll show it to you below).

If you think that the win rate doesn’t matter, you’re wrong. You need to push in the beginning, even if you reached your daily reward cap. Getting to 1000+ trophies will make your life so much easier because you will then get much more resources every day!
It took me about 2 hours to get to that point with a fairly fresh BH3 base and I can only recommend you do the same. You will get enough resources from your 3 attacks every day to keep your Lab and Builder busy for the whole day.

Now let me show you some defensive tips that you have to keep in mind for your base.

If you’re looking for some tips on how to attack properly, please check out my recent guide about attacking strategy:

Centralize Your Builder Hall

Stars matter, so make sure not to give them away easily. No matter how much destruction your opponent takes from you, Stars take priority.

I wouldn’t have been able to pick up the victory if my opponent didn’t have his Builder Hall on the outside:
Offsetting your Builder Hall is giving away one Star for free – it should not be possible for your opponent to snipe your Builder Hall easily over walls or directly from the outside!
Always keep 2 tiles between the Builder Hall and the walls. This make it impossible for Sneaky Archers to snipe over the wall.

If you don’t have enough walls or buildings yet, make sure your Builder Hall is surrounded by other buildings and defenses:

Close Walls

Closing Walls is extremely important. This will force attacking troops to take a path that you want them to take.

I know it’s tempting to build a funnel with the walls, but your opponent will perform a lot better against your base when you don’t have a closed wall ring or line.

Defense Sniping – Not With Me!

You probably don’t have many defenses in your Builder Base yet, so every single one of them counts! As soon as one goes down, your overall defense is much weaker.

Many attackers know this so they will try to take them out first – you have to prevent that at all cost!

Never set your defenses where they can be reached directly! Always have either a wall with 2 tiles distance or another building in front of them!

Making this even better, you should also try to have all your defenses covered by the range of another defenses.
Having your Archer Tower set on Long Distance Mode will help a lot in the beginning!

It will cover the whole area and make it very hard for your opponent to snipe out single buildings without investing more than one unit.

Trap Combinations

The Push Trap is a great way to move attacking troops where you want them, and with 4 tiles area, you can use it to push attacking troops into Spring Traps.
They do not damage troops, so you should point them away from your base. Put troops directly on your Spring Traps or push away to have fewer troops next to your base that your defenses can then take care of.

I know it’s funny to push troops around with combined Push Traps, but there’s no use in doing that.

In general, always test out your traps and check all replays to see which side your attackers prefer. I wrote a full detailed guide on that technique a while ago for Home Villages, but you can adapt it easily.

Now I would like to show you some solid layouts you can use.

Builder Base Designs BH2 to BH5

I’ve been gathering some solid base layouts that you can use that I’ve seen great results with.

Builder Hall 2 (BH2) Base Layout

If you own a BH2, there’s not much you can design due to the low amount of buildings, but that doesn’t mean that the layout doesn’t matter!
I recommend you use a layout like this because it will:
  • Push attacking Barbarians coming from the top away from your Builder Hall
  • Make your Cannon not directly snipe-able
  • Redirects barbarians from the bottom to the sides while the Cannon takes them out
This is probably the best you can do until you get your Builder Hall Level 3.

Builder Hall 3 (BH3) Base Layouts

Here’s my current Builder Base Level 3 layout and it’s working great so far. I’ve been pushing to 1400 Trophies and lost only 2 of the last 50 Versus Battles.
People are always attacking with Giants into my trap setups or spam Archers/Minions that get taken down fast.

Make sure you have each defense covered by at least 1 outside building, and your Archer Tower has to be at Long Range mode as well!

Maxed Builder Hall 3 Base Layout

If you have built all structures available for Builder Hall Level 3, you might want to use this layout.
Your Crusher needs to be inside and not sniped from over the walls.

Then you should focus on upgrading your Archer Tower to make it shoot Sneaky Archers in 2 shots instead of 3 shots.

Builder Hall 4 (BH4) Base Layouts

When reaching Builder Hall Level 4, you will get a ton of new stuff and it starts to become interesting.
  • Guard Post (like a defensive Clan Castle)
  • 2nd Archer Tower
  • 2nd Cannon
  • Air Bombs
  • more Walls
In general, ring base layouts will work best since the limited amount of troops will struggle with pathing on the inside, while getting shot with full power almost all the time.

Also, make sure to have your Guard Post set on the inside so it does not get isolated.
This is an example how you can arrange your layout; I also recommend you test out your traps a lot and see which spots work best.

Getting the Builder Hall is almost impossible with this layout, so your opponent will not be able to score more than 1 Star against your base (without the Builder Hall it’s not possible to get a second Star, even with 99% destruction).

Alternatively, you can also try out this base layout:
Ground troops will ignore the Builder Hall due to the walls and the other buildings around it. You should use this one when you haven’t build your Guard Post yet. ๐Ÿ™‚

Builder Hall 5 (BH5) Base Layouts

Only a few have upgraded to Builder Hall level 5 so far, but I still want to show you some top base layouts.

Builder Hall 5 is extremely attractive because it unlocks the Battle Machine and also let you gear up Cannons to Double Cannons (and more in the future) in your Home Village.

The main strategy is pointing toward an offset Builder Hall. You want to have the most defensive power located in the core. The Builder Hall is simply to big to fit and make a good layout with the walls.
In this base layout, the Builder Hall is offset, but not defenseless. The Guard Post and the Multi Mortar in the middle are providing good protection. The attacker won’t be able to destroy the whole base, no matter what tactic they try.
In this base it’s very hard (nearly impossible) for the attacker to go through the layers filled with defenses while being under full fire almost all the time.
