Mass Baby Dragons are a powerful army composition and probably one of the 3 most-used compositions in total. It got a little bad reputation lately as being the “Dirty Baby Dragon Spammer” tactic, but it’s still one of the most-effective ways to 3-Star at BH5 and get solid 2-Star attacks at BH6 if done right.

In this guide I will walk you through the details of this attacking strategy and show you how I get solid results with it that let me win many Versus Battles with it.

Win Versus Battles Attacking Strategy – Baby Dragons | TEC Clashzz

Baby Dragons in Versus Battles

Baby Dragons have a special ability called Frenzy, that will double their damage output to up to 120% when they are far enough from any other air troop and this is the key of the attack because you can make them double effective with the right deployment strategies.

Attacking with Baby Dragons follow a simple plan:
  1. Use the Baby Dragons in Frenzy mode to go through the layers of the base until the Crusher and the path to the Builder Hall is free
  2. Send in your Battle Machine to get the Builder Hall for a 60%+ 2-Star attack
Common Mistake with Baby Dragons

The most common mistake is spamming the Baby Dragons, which means that the attacker will send in all Baby Dragons in one area and then let the attack happen. The problem is, two Baby Dragons without Frenzy Mode will deal less damage than one Baby Dragon in Frenzy Mode so you’re losing a lot of effectivity plus the Air Bomb Factory will be able to hit more than one Baby Dragon at the same time.
How to win with Baby Dragons
The important part of your whole attack is the part where you clear off the road to the Builder Hall! Do not focus on getting as much percentage with your Baby Dragons even when you can use one to get 3 outside buildings easily, focus on clearing the path for your Battle Machine! A 60% 2-Star is better than a 70% 1-Star attack ๐Ÿ™‚

When you’re done, your opponents base should look something like this:
So first of all, you will need to scout how you will set this path for your Battle Machine up and here’s what will help you with this.
  1. You will need to find a point where your Battle Machine will go through the walls into the base (and not go shopping around it)
  2. Clear off the Crusher in this direction to the Builder Hall, the Crusher along with some Cannon fire can take your Battle Machine down in seconds!
  3. Try to get the Guard Post troops down, they often times distract your Battle Machine and make it go somewhere else!
Wall Entry Point

My own rough rule of thumb is that I have to make sure that outside structures are all cleared on the side of the base where I want the Battle Machine to enter – this makes sure that it will hit the walls and not the outside structures on the other side of the base.

Also, as you cleared off all defenses on this side, do not use your Electric Hammer before the wall piece is destroyed! Why I’m saying this? Well, when you use it directly in front of the wall, it will use all 3 hits to destroy the wall and will not be reloaded fast enough and high damage could take your Battle Machine down.
When using it directly when the wall is destroyed, you make sure that all hits with extra damage go straight for the Builder Hall and destroy it without any doubt.

Crusher & Double Cannons

You have to get one Crusher down or your Battle Machine will be in big trouble! This is your first priority in cleaning and when you have Baby Dragons left, try to get Cannons and Double Cannons in this area down as well!

Air Bob Factory & Baby Dragons

The Air Bombs are the most dangerous thing against Baby Dragons, because it will get them down within a few seconds and hits. Luckily, you can trick the Air Bomb Factory quite easily because the bombs are flying slow and can only target one target at once.
As you can see in the image above, wait until the Air Bombs target one of your Baby Dragons and then send in another one to go straight for the Air Bomb Factory. While the Air Bombs target the other Baby Dragon it can be taken down – with this strategy you only lose 2 Baby Dragons and have the most dangerous defense out of your way.

From my experience, it makes more sense to save the Battle Machine for the shot on the Builder Hall than wasting it to take down the Air Bombs in a suicide attack.

Guard Post
The Guard Post can be so annoying and ruining your attack easily! In the very second, they will aggro your Battle Machine, the Battle Machine will stop and retarget to them. In some situations, the Battle Machine will walk straight into another section of the base and get shot down too fast before destroying the Builder Hall
Here you can see a situation occurring often when the Battle Machine hits the Guard Post troops and get destroyed by the Crusher in the meantime!

Deployment With Baby Dragons

Deployment with Baby Dragons requires some experience but you can get that fast. You will always want to try to have like 3-4 Baby Dragons deployed at the same time, attacking different defenses while making sure they don’t deactivate each other’s Frenzy Mode!
So make sure to know what defense your Baby Dragons should attack next.

The next important part is to time your deployment right. When the Firecrackers along with Archer Towers target a Baby Dragon, it will go down rather fast and you want to send in the following Baby Dragon soon enough that it takes the position directly after.
The reason why you want to do this is, all defenses have a certain amount of firepower and if they target one Baby Dragon, the other ones can deal their damage without getting shot down fast. You’re basically saving the damage the Baby Dragon would receive while flying to his target.
This will optimise your damage output and make your Baby Dragons last longer. When you look at the picture above, you see that the damage is divided by the 3 active Baby Dragons and they will survive longer (and deal more damage), when you only have one active, all defenses will target it and shoot it down so fast that it can barely deal any damage at all.

Thank you...

Attacking at Builder Hall 5 is working different from the prior Builder Hall Level, the reason for this is that you will have a Hero, the Battle Machine, plus there are plenty of more defenses available (Multi Mortar, second Double Cannon) that will make it harder to attack. In this guide, I will show you the two most popular and well-working attacking strategies (that use the Battle Machine) plus one that works you haven’t unlocked the Battle Machine yet or it’s upgrading right now.

Builder Hall 5 Attacking Guide

Before I will introduce you to the attacking strategies, I’d like to talk about some very important things that you need to mind when you just upgraded to Builder Hall 5.
  • Get the Battle Machine as soon as possible! It’s like additional 2 Giants + 3 Archers (in terms of stats) on the battlefield
  • Get your Baby Dragons to max level first
  • Then focus on upgrading Cannon Cart
I already mentioned I have 3 attacking strategies for BH5 here for you and each of them is perfect depending on the state you’re in:
  1. Giants with Archer if you just upgraded to Builder Hall 5 and have no Battle Machine (OR your Battle Machine is upgrading right now!)
  2. Baby Dragons when you have the Battle Machine Level 4 and lower (no ability) – used as a tank for the Baby Dragons
  3. Giant & Cannon Cart – the most powerful one but it requires high-level Cannon Carts & the Battle Machines’ ability (unlocks at Level 5)
So basically you will be using all 3 of them on your way through Builder Hall 5 – the first one until you unlock the Battle Machine (and if it’s upgrading right now), the second one during the period where you upgrade your Cannon Carts and your Battle Machine and the third one to push hard.

That’s the basic plan, the only exception will be when you see a weird base layout that has an extreme weakness to a certain attacking strategy.

Giants & Archer BH5 Attacking without Battle Machine

The period without Battle Machine are the toughest at Builder Hall 5 – but you will have to go through that period in the beginning until you unlocked the Battle Machine and also when you upgrade it as it is not available during the upgrading time (like your other Heroes).

In this case, I really recommend using Giants & Archers, because Baby Dragons will have a problem with the additional structures available at Builder Hall 5 that will take a lot more time to clear off and the second Firecracker doesn’t make it easier for you neither.

First things first, you won’t be able to do 3-Star attacks without the Battle Machine against a fairly upgraded BH5 base, but you will be able to do decent 2-Star attacks – to do this, you need to focus on getting the Builder Hall.
Here you can see a normal BH5 setup and your goal with this strategy will always be:
  • Get the Multi Mortar destroyed as soon as possible
  • Prevent hitting into the Crusher
  • Get the Builder Hall
This makes your attacking possibilities quite limited when it comes to where you’ll attack the base from.

In the case of the above base, you will enter at the top right Cannon, clear off with some Archers and then go in and let the rest of your Archers destroy the Multi Mortar and snipe the Builder Hall.

There are not many designs out there at BH5 with open walls, but don’t go with Bombers since they will die off from the Multi Mortar extremely soon – your Giants will enter the blind spot of the Multi Mortar soon so it will target the Bombers.

I’ve been writing a very detailed guide about this attacking composition here for BH4 that you should read:

Builder Hall 5 Attacking Strategy with Battle Machine

Here we go with the solid attacking strategies that will rock at BH5 with your Battle Machine. I also wrote a full guide on the Battle Machine, including on how to use the special ability here:

BH5 Attacking With Baby Dragons

Baby Dragons are an attacking strategy that is very good at BH4, but with the additional structures on Builder Hall 5 it struggles getting to whole base down without support – that support comes with the Battle Machine. The Battle Machine will:
  • clear off outside structures to help building the funnel
  • tank some Archer Tower and Tesla damage
When using this strategy, you will have to keep following things in mind:
  • Always deploy your Baby Dragons away from each other to keep them in their damage boosted ability mode! Two Baby Dragons on the same place deal the same damage (without their ability) than one and might suffer from splash damage of the Air Bomb or traps in air mode!
  • Go in for the Air Bomb, you’ll need to keep that down as soon as possible
You’ll always start your attack off with deploying your Battle Machine to clear outside structures and then put there 3-4 Baby Dragons around it.
Especially the outside buildings are slowing down the Baby Dragons a lot, so the battle machine is a good help here.

As soon as one Baby Dragon goes down, replace it with a new one. Be patient! You don’t want them to group up and lose their ability!
This is basically it! All you need is to keep calm and let your Baby Dragons work through the base step by step.

Builder Hall 5 Attacking with Cannon Carts

This is the most powerful strategy, but it also requires that you have your Cannon Carts at Level 7 or higher and your Battle Machine should also be at Level 5 where you unlocked the Electric Hammer ability – this will heal your Battle Machine every 14 seconds and also give a damage boost in between that will destroy any building in 3 hits.

The reason why you need the Cannon Carts fairly upgraded to high level is that otherwise they can die away when the Multi Mortar targets them once. It happens often enough that it will destroy your raid and if they survive it once it’s most of the times enough to get the 3-Star attack.

You can use one of the following compositions:
  • 3 Giants & 6 Cannon Carts
  • 6 Giants & 4 Cannon Carts
I personally recommend using the 6 Giants, as the Cannon Carts deal a good amount of damage but die soon and you want to make sure that your Giants tank long enough.

When starting the battle, always send in your Battle Machine first from a distance and hit the ability directly.
The Battle Machine’s ability will then start recharging, but the extra damage boost for the next 3 hits will be active until it has hit 3 times – you basically charge it up and have your ability available again when it reaches the first buildings. You can read more about that in my Battle Machine Guide here.

As soon as it reaches the first structures, you will need to send your Boxer Giants in in the direction of the Multi Mortar. The Multi Mortar is the target you need to take out as soon as possible!
Now just send in your Cannon Cart after it and hit the ability of your Battle Machine as often as possible. This should get you the 3-Star attack in most cases

The Battle Machine is the first Hero in your Builder Base and unlocks at Builder Hall Level 5. You can use it for several parts in your attacks, depending on your strategy. Also, I will give you some insights into its ability, the Electric Hammer.

Integrate the Battle Machine in your attacks

The Battle Machine has a good amount of hitpoints, about double the amount of a Boxer Giant. Also, it’s immune to Push Traps and Spring Traps like any other Hero.

This makes it not only a good damage dealer, but you can also use it for tanking within your attacks.
I know that many out there consider the Battle Machine as a pure tank, but I don’t recommend that:
  • The Battle Machine doesn’t have a favorite target
  • With multiple defenses on it, it will die fast and you won’t be able to use the ability frequently (more on that in the section about the Electric Hammer)
I would always recommend using the Battle Machine along with a group of Giants. The Battle Machine can support with damage dealing while standing up against the damage for a good amount of time.

Here are the things the Battle Machine can do within your raids:
  • Help tanks destroying defenses in the first line of your attack
  • Clean outside structures to help you building the funnel
  • Suicide attack against certain defenses (depends on the layout of the base you’re attacking)
  • Help your cleaning troops out in the later phase of the raid
It totally depends on the base layout you’re attacking, so I will show you now what you should look for to make the decision.

Here you can see a good example where you want to send in your Battle Machine along with your Giants to get the Multi Mortar and the other structures down quickly before they hit the Cannon Carts (including the Builder Hall).
Here’s another example where the Battle Machine is used to get the Air Bombs out of the way to make a clear path for Baby Dragons (Suicide Attack). The Battle Machine can destroy 4-6 buildings easily before it goes down, so don’t be afraid to sacrifice it to get a strong defense out of your way:
If you attack with Baby Dragons, you can use the Battle Machine perfectly as a tank on the inside while the Baby Dragons will clear everything around it – make sure to deploy them one after each other:

Battle Machine on defense

The Battle Machine won’t defend your base, although the Battle Machine Altar is in your base. There’s no reason to mind that in your base design!

The Battle Machine Ability – Electric Hammer

If you have upgraded your Battle Machine to Level 5, you’ll be able to use the Electric Hammer. This works the same way as with your other Heroes. Right now, max is Level 5, but the description already shows that there will be a better Electric Hammer at Battle Machine Level 10 (which should be added soon).

The Electric Hammer will:
  • Heal 800 hitpoints (that’s about 20% of the total health of a Battle Machine Level 5)
  • Increases damage done by 250% for the next 3 hits
  • Recharges within 14 seconds
The ability is extremely valuable for the Battle Machine, especially with the extra damage and the healing – but the most important thing about it is that it reloads, so you will be able to use it every 14 seconds.
Other Heroes can only use their ability once per raid, but the Battle Machine can use it as often as possible within the raiding time!

Now this all sounds great and it is, indeed – but this also makes it hard to time the ability…
  • …heal up the Battle Machine as often as possible, but don’t waste any healing
  • …deal the extra damage appropriately
This puts you in the difficult spot that you don’t want to wait too long to use the healing (because the sooner you use it, the sooner it will become available again).

So here’s the good news! The extra damage from the ability will be active for the next 3 hits even if the Battle Machine will take a couple of seconds to do these hits!!!
This makes it easier for you:
  • Use the Electric Hammer as charging when the Battle Machine walks towards a base! This will give the extra damage for the first hits and reload the ability sooner
  • Use it as soon as your Battle Machine has lost 20% of its hitpoints!
That’s it. Don’t be afraid to lose any of the extra damage when the Battle Machine is far away from the next target – it will save the extra damage and your ability will reload sooner.

BH5 Base Layouts – Builder Base 5 Designs | TEC Clashzz
Base Design matters a lot in Versus Battles – it is responsible for half of your success and no matter how good you are at attacking, if your base gets constantly wrecked you won’t be able to get into the higher Trophy Ranges where the loot is good. I gathered together the latest solid base designs for BH5 and will also update them constantly.

Builder Hall 5 Base Layouts

Before I show you the best defensive Builder Hall 5 Base Designs, I also want to recommend some articles about the Builder Base that you should read as well:
These two guides will help you beat BH5 completely without any problems

Anti 2-Star Builder Hall 5 Base Design

This base is designed to protect the Builder Hall at any costs. The ring on the back makes it impossible to get in there without heavy incest (Baby Dragons will have a hard time against Air Bomb). From the front side of the base, the attacker will have a hard time against the traps and the Crusher with the Multi Mortar shooting all the time.
BH5 Base Layouts – Builder Base 5 Designs | TEC Clashzz

Anti 3-Star Base Layout BH5

This base has a great feature that most attackers don’t have in mind when attacking. They will break through the wall on the back and think the Builder Hall is an easy target.
BH5 Base Layouts – Builder Base 5 Designs | TEC Clashzz
They forget that Giants will then start walking around the base to the front instead of hitting the walls for the inside compartment.

Builder Hall 5 Base – The Ring

Here’s another base layout I really like a lot – it’s centered structure makes it extremely hard to go for the Builder Hall.
BH5 Base Layouts – Builder Base 5 Designs | TEC Clashzz
The outside structures with the intersections make funneling a real nightmare and all the strong defenses are on the inside – the only attack you’ll probably see is sniping Archers getting to around 50% 1 Star attack that will make you win often times by just getting a high percentage or 2-Star yourself

Anti-Baby Dragon BH5 layout

Baby Dragons are extremely popular at Builder Hall 5, so this base design will shut them down. You have 2 deadly zones for them – one around the Air Bomb with the deadly Archer Towers on power mode and the other one with the two Firecrackers at the Crusher area.
BH5 Base Layouts – Builder Base 5 Designs | TEC Clashzz
Both zones are far away from each other, so breaking one of them will still mean that the other one will stand up and prevent anything close to 3-Star.

Most attacker go full speed against the Air Bomb and hope to get the Builder Hall, but they will need to incest all of their Baby Dragons for that because the Hidden Tesla at max level will also deal a solid damge along witht he Archer Towers.

BH5 Layout With Trap Surprise

This layout is sneaky, but the Builder Hall baits all ground attack to come from the left side and they will all walk into the traps – suddenly half of the army is gone.
BH5 Base Layouts – Builder Base 5 Designs | TEC Clashzz
The general structure is impossible to crack and I haven’t seen this base getting 3-Stared so far as troops will go around so much and it’s hard to funnel them into the core area.

When you do Versus Battles in your Builder Base it’s not only about executing a good attack; it’s also about defending against your direct opponent. A good base can save you a lot of attacks and can even compensate for a bad attack with a good defense. I have had multiple Versus Battles when I did not get a Star or 50% destruction, but my base got my back and saved me the victory. In this guide, I’ll show you some defensive tips and some working base layouts for your Builder Base.

Builder Base Defending Tips

I know many here are still in the mindset of regular Multiplayer Attacks or Clan War attacks, where offense > defense. In Versus Battles, your defensive strength has a direct impact on the result and can be the deciding factor between victory and loss.

If you have a bad base and consistently get 2-Star or 3-Star defenses against your base, you will not be able to get a lot of victories and your good attacks might result in either a tie or even a loss.\
As you can see, my base totally got my back here and I would never have won the attack without the solid design I have (I’ll show it to you below).

If you think that the win rate doesn’t matter, you’re wrong. You need to push in the beginning, even if you reached your daily reward cap. Getting to 1000+ trophies will make your life so much easier because you will then get much more resources every day!
It took me about 2 hours to get to that point with a fairly fresh BH3 base and I can only recommend you do the same. You will get enough resources from your 3 attacks every day to keep your Lab and Builder busy for the whole day.

Now let me show you some defensive tips that you have to keep in mind for your base.

If you’re looking for some tips on how to attack properly, please check out my recent guide about attacking strategy:

Centralize Your Builder Hall

Stars matter, so make sure not to give them away easily. No matter how much destruction your opponent takes from you, Stars take priority.

I wouldn’t have been able to pick up the victory if my opponent didn’t have his Builder Hall on the outside:
Offsetting your Builder Hall is giving away one Star for free – it should not be possible for your opponent to snipe your Builder Hall easily over walls or directly from the outside!
Always keep 2 tiles between the Builder Hall and the walls. This make it impossible for Sneaky Archers to snipe over the wall.

If you don’t have enough walls or buildings yet, make sure your Builder Hall is surrounded by other buildings and defenses:

Close Walls

Closing Walls is extremely important. This will force attacking troops to take a path that you want them to take.

I know it’s tempting to build a funnel with the walls, but your opponent will perform a lot better against your base when you don’t have a closed wall ring or line.

Defense Sniping – Not With Me!

You probably don’t have many defenses in your Builder Base yet, so every single one of them counts! As soon as one goes down, your overall defense is much weaker.

Many attackers know this so they will try to take them out first – you have to prevent that at all cost!

Never set your defenses where they can be reached directly! Always have either a wall with 2 tiles distance or another building in front of them!

Making this even better, you should also try to have all your defenses covered by the range of another defenses.
Having your Archer Tower set on Long Distance Mode will help a lot in the beginning!

It will cover the whole area and make it very hard for your opponent to snipe out single buildings without investing more than one unit.

Trap Combinations

The Push Trap is a great way to move attacking troops where you want them, and with 4 tiles area, you can use it to push attacking troops into Spring Traps.
They do not damage troops, so you should point them away from your base. Put troops directly on your Spring Traps or push away to have fewer troops next to your base that your defenses can then take care of.

I know it’s funny to push troops around with combined Push Traps, but there’s no use in doing that.

In general, always test out your traps and check all replays to see which side your attackers prefer. I wrote a full detailed guide on that technique a while ago for Home Villages, but you can adapt it easily.

Now I would like to show you some solid layouts you can use.

Builder Base Designs BH2 to BH5

I’ve been gathering some solid base layouts that you can use that I’ve seen great results with.

Builder Hall 2 (BH2) Base Layout

If you own a BH2, there’s not much you can design due to the low amount of buildings, but that doesn’t mean that the layout doesn’t matter!
I recommend you use a layout like this because it will:
  • Push attacking Barbarians coming from the top away from your Builder Hall
  • Make your Cannon not directly snipe-able
  • Redirects barbarians from the bottom to the sides while the Cannon takes them out
This is probably the best you can do until you get your Builder Hall Level 3.

Builder Hall 3 (BH3) Base Layouts

Here’s my current Builder Base Level 3 layout and it’s working great so far. I’ve been pushing to 1400 Trophies and lost only 2 of the last 50 Versus Battles.
People are always attacking with Giants into my trap setups or spam Archers/Minions that get taken down fast.

Make sure you have each defense covered by at least 1 outside building, and your Archer Tower has to be at Long Range mode as well!

Maxed Builder Hall 3 Base Layout

If you have built all structures available for Builder Hall Level 3, you might want to use this layout.
Your Crusher needs to be inside and not sniped from over the walls.

Then you should focus on upgrading your Archer Tower to make it shoot Sneaky Archers in 2 shots instead of 3 shots.

Builder Hall 4 (BH4) Base Layouts

When reaching Builder Hall Level 4, you will get a ton of new stuff and it starts to become interesting.
  • Guard Post (like a defensive Clan Castle)
  • 2nd Archer Tower
  • 2nd Cannon
  • Air Bombs
  • more Walls
In general, ring base layouts will work best since the limited amount of troops will struggle with pathing on the inside, while getting shot with full power almost all the time.

Also, make sure to have your Guard Post set on the inside so it does not get isolated.
This is an example how you can arrange your layout; I also recommend you test out your traps a lot and see which spots work best.

Getting the Builder Hall is almost impossible with this layout, so your opponent will not be able to score more than 1 Star against your base (without the Builder Hall it’s not possible to get a second Star, even with 99% destruction).

Alternatively, you can also try out this base layout:
Ground troops will ignore the Builder Hall due to the walls and the other buildings around it. You should use this one when you haven’t build your Guard Post yet. ๐Ÿ™‚

Builder Hall 5 (BH5) Base Layouts

Only a few have upgraded to Builder Hall level 5 so far, but I still want to show you some top base layouts.

Builder Hall 5 is extremely attractive because it unlocks the Battle Machine and also let you gear up Cannons to Double Cannons (and more in the future) in your Home Village.

The main strategy is pointing toward an offset Builder Hall. You want to have the most defensive power located in the core. The Builder Hall is simply to big to fit and make a good layout with the walls.
In this base layout, the Builder Hall is offset, but not defenseless. The Guard Post and the Multi Mortar in the middle are providing good protection. The attacker won’t be able to destroy the whole base, no matter what tactic they try.
In this base it’s very hard (nearly impossible) for the attacker to go through the layers filled with defenses while being under full fire almost all the time.
